Here's exactly why.

SumSushi was designed, from day one, to not need to collect or process any personal data. This isn't a promise about how we handle your data — it's that, by how the app is built, there's no data that ever leaves your phone for us — or anyone — to handle.

🍣 How SumSushi works, and why that matters here

SumSushi has no backend or server of its own. When someone creates a "table," their phone starts advertising over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE); when everyone else joins with the 4-character code, their phones connect directly to the host's, never touching the internet at any point. Each person's name, the table code, and the piece counter travel solely over that short-range Bluetooth connection, between phones that are physically together.

There is no cloud database, no API, no service anywhere that stores information about tables or the people using them. When you close a table, that information stops being shared — it never left your phones to begin with.

📶 The Bluetooth permission

The first time you use SumSushi, iOS will ask for Bluetooth permission. It's used exclusively to connect your phone with the ones at your table while you eat — to advertise or discover nearby tables and to send the piece counter. SumSushi doesn't use Bluetooth to track your location, or for any purpose beyond that.

📱 The little that's saved stays on your phone only

For the app to work well, it saves a small amount of information only in your own device's local storage, using the standard tools iOS provides for that. It's never sent to any server because, again, there isn't one:

• The name you chose to identify yourself at the table (it doesn't have to be your real name).
• If you created a table, its state while it's still active — so it isn't lost if you accidentally close the app.
• A technical identifier for your device within the app, so you can reconnect to your own row if you briefly lose connection. It doesn't identify the person, only that app install on that phone.

All of this disappears if you uninstall the app.

👀 Who sees your name and your counter

Only the people connected to the same table, for as long as that session lasts, see your name and how many pieces you've had — just like they would if you were sitting right there. No one outside that table, and not even us, has access to that information.

🧒 Minors

Because SumSushi doesn't collect any personal data from anyone, there's no separate treatment for minors, since there's no data processing of any kind. That said, the app isn't specifically directed at children.

🔄 Changes to this policy

If SumSushi ever adds a feature that does require processing some data (for example, an optional backend), this page will be updated before that happens, and the date of the last revision will be clearly shown at the top.
